What’s on at WordCamp Europe 2023?
WordCamp Europe 2023 has a great mix of sessions and events, including three tracks of presentations, two tracks of workshops, the WP Connect schedule, Contributor Day, and the Wellness Track.
Below are some of the highlights from the event to get you excited about WCEU 2023 and help you decide what to see and do.
And if you’re coming to WCEU 2023, be sure to say “hi” to us at the Gravity Forms booth. We’ll also be at the after party to celebrate 20 years of WordPress, and we hope to see you there!
Main Sessions
With 43 sessions over the two main days, there are plenty of talks to see. Here are a few that the Gravity Forms team is most looking forward to:
- 10 Things That All WordPress Plugin Developers Should Avoid – David Artiss from WordPress VIP shares examples from his 30 years of experience working in support to help guide plugin developers.
- Test Instead of Guessing — Generate More Leads Through Growth Hacking – Learn how to measure and test your growth marketing strategy by following the advice from Viola Gruner, Head of Marketing at Inpsyde, who used this approach to improve conversion rates by 18%.
- Women and Non-Binary Folx of WordPress – In this panel session, you’ll hear from a diverse group of people discussing underrepresented Folx involvement in the WordPress open source project.
- Don’t Sell WordPress Like It’s 2016: The Evolving Landscape of WordPress Marketing – This talk from Afshana Diya on how to sell WordPress in its latest incarnation should be helpful for anyone promoting WordPress to clients and customers.
- Creating MRR for WP Agency Owners. A Critical Look at Current and Future Business Models – Want to know more about generating recurring revenue for your agency? Come and hear Roger Rosweide talk about different models for generating MRR, and join in as he launches a live collaborative product during the talk.
- Content Creation with the Help of AI – Find out how human-created content compares to AI-generated content in terms of SEO, and learn more about taking your content to the next level with ChatGPT and Bard.
- Variations on a Theme: 20 Years of WordPress – Don’t miss Matt Mullenweg and Josepha Haden Chomphosy, Executive Director of WordPress, share their thoughts on 20 years of WordPress.
Workshop Sessions
As well as the three main tracks for the talks, there are also two workshop tracks running alongside them each day.
During the workshop sessions, you’ll get your hands dirty solving real problems related to coding, design, or planning a marketing strategy. If you prefer more interactive sessions rather than simply listening to a talk, the workshops could be for you.
Some examples of the workshop sessions include:
- Developing WordPress Blocks Using Plain JavaScript – Learn how to build blocks without needing to install anything on your local development environment with Jonathan Bossenger from Automattic.
- Create a Theme Using the Site Editor – Without Coding! – If you’re a WordPress user rather than a WordPress developer, you can learn how to change how your site looks without code in this no-code hands-on workshop led by Carolina Nymark from Yoast.
- How I Learnt to Stop Worrying & Love Our AI Rulers – Are AI services really coming for our jobs? Find out how WordPress developers can leverage new AI-based tools to make life easier. James Dominy also discusses what these tools are good and bad at and how their use will impact the WordPress ecosystem in the near and distant future.
You’ll need to register in advance for the workshop sessions, with registrations opening at 2:00 PM on Contributor Day (June 8). Spaces are limited, so be quick if there are any you’d like to attend!
If you want to learn some practical skills and work on specific tasks, you’re sure to enjoy the workshop sessions!
WP Connect
There’s also the WP Connect space which has six sessions over the two days of WCEU, where attendees are invited to participate in the open discussions and share their experiences and points of view.
Sessions include How Contributing to the WP Open-source Project Changed Our Lives with Michelle Frechette and Developer Relations / Developer Advocacy in Open Source hosted by Michael Burridge. There will also be a demo of WordPress Playground — an online tool that lets you test themes and plugins in your browser.
Wellness Track
If yoga or tai chi sounds appealing, there are beginner-level sessions of both taking place during the conference as part of the Wellness Track. There’s also a short hike to Lycabettus, the highest point in Central Athens, planned for both days.
Side Events
If there’s anything else you’d like to do in Athens, and you’d like to do it with other attendees, you can register your own side event, and the WCEU team will share the details.
Contributor Day
Last but not least in our guide is Contributor Day. Taking place on June 8 — the day before the talks start — Contributor Day gives you the opportunity to contribute to the WordPress project in a friendly and supportive environment.
There are technical tasks to work on, such as bug testing, writing patches, and working on themes and plugins, as well as non-technical ones, including improving the WordPress documentation, translating WordPress, and taking and curating photos for Openverse.
