Gravity Forms 2.6

Last month we released Gravity Forms 2.6, and we have already seen this latest version of our WordPress form plugin installed on hundreds of thousands of websites. This update is packed with new and improved features that make a significant difference to the form editor experience – we are now calling on all our customers to install 2.6 if you are still yet to do so!

In this article, we talk to some of the Gravity Forms team, who share their favorite 2.6 features, improvements, and changes, giving you more insight into what this latest version of our plugin can do for your form building process.

So, if you haven’t installed Gravity Forms 2.6 yet, here’s why you should…

2.6 simplifies the process of working with forms

Jim True

Jim True (Support Engineer, Support Team)

“With 2.6, I love that users now have the ability to embed forms into a page or post directly from the Gravity Forms editor. This is ideal for those who don’t have extensive WordPress experience, as well as anyone who just wants to speed up the form creation process (and who doesn’t really?!)

Another show stopper is the Submit button that has been relocated to the form editor and can now be positioned inline with other form fields. Both the Embed Form flyout and the inline Submit button are such great new features and significantly simplify the process of working with forms.”

The loading spinner: A long overdue enhancement

Michelle Bauer (QA Analyst, Product Team)

“My favorite new feature of 2.6 is the loading spinner on settings pages, like payment feeds. It is a long overdue enhancement that visually indicates to the user that items on the page are still loading.

Before this was implemented, I often found myself trying to click on settings that hadn’t fully loaded yet, resulting in an error on the page and frustration on my end. I’m sure everyone will appreciate this improved experience within the form editor.”

Chris Hajer (Support Engineer, Support Team)

“The same as Michelle, for me the loading indicator is the biggest (littlest) improvement in 2.6. It’s been requested for a long time and every time I see it now it makes me happy! Great idea and great job to everyone involved with it. On the surface, it seems like a minor thing, but it has a major impact on usability.

Being able to move the Submit button inline is another favorite 2.6 feature of mine. It has been requested for a L O N G time, and I’m really pleased it’s finally here – so far the feedback from our customers about this feature has been VERY positive!”

Getting the submit button to be inline used to be hard work, now it’s easy!

Nicholas Smith

Nicholas Smith (Front-end Developer, Marketing Team)

“When I was building sites for clients, on just about every site, I ended up making a newsletter signup form that needed to go in a small space – getting the button to be inline with the rest of the form took a lot of work. Now you can do that with just one little setting in the editor, and it is so easy.”

“One of my favorite changes with 2.6 is the relocated Submit button. Now the Submit button has moved into the form editor it means you can easily position the button within the last line of a form alongside other form fields – without needing to use CSS Ready Classes. It’s now easier than ever to visualize and customize how your forms look from within the form editor!”

Saving forms is now fast, seamless, and feels a lot more modern!

Morgan Kay (Software Engineer, Product Team)

“The AJAX saving really surprised me. I knew Sherif Mesallam (Software Engineer on the Product Team) was working on it, and I knew that in principle it was a good idea, but I didn’t really think it was going to be very exciting.

Then I started using it and I was really surprised by how much it improved the experience of editing forms! Saving forms is now fast, seamless, and just feels a lot more modern.”

2.6 developer-focused features

Aaron Speer

Aaron Speer (Software Engineer, Product Team)

“When it comes to developer-focused 2.6 features, there are two things that really got my blood pumping.

The first is a biggie: Storybook Components. We’ve begun the process of turning our entire Admin UI into reusable components that live in a centralized location. Not only does this help our UI stay consistent, it will also allow third-party developers to utilize those same components in their own add-ons, allowing the entire Gravity Forms ecosystem to establish a coherent visual identity.

The second is less grand in comparison, but no less impactful: as mentioned above, we’ve added loading indicators that can be displayed any time a long-running process is happening. It’s a small change, but the net impact is that our entire UI feels substantially snappier and more responsive. The best part is, the loading spinners are a Component that can be leveraged by third-party developers as well!”
